Best AI Agents in 2026: Coding, Support and Workflow

Short answer

For coding, the leading agents are Claude Code, OpenAI Codex and Cursor's agent mode; Gemini CLI is the free option. For customer support, Intercom Fin and Sierra sell agents priced by outcome or contract. For business workflows, Lindy, Zapier and n8n let you build agents without much code.

Agents still need review. Limit what they can access, and check their work before it reaches customers.

  • OpenAI: ChatGPT Work (27 August), Codex with GPT-6 Astra (3 September) and an Agents API public beta (17 September) were reported.
  • Anthropic: background computer use in Claude and Cowork (3 September) was reported; Claude Code is included in all paid Claude plans (verified).
  • Meta: a free Muse personal agent was reported on 10 September.
  • The Model Context Protocol published a new specification version dated 2026-07-28, which many agents use to connect to tools.

Ask what it can do without asking you, what it can access, how you approve risky actions, and what it logs. Start with read-only access and a small task, then widen permissions as it proves reliable. We do not publish autonomy scores until we have a published rubric and tests.

What changed in this update

  • Removed the 'aixjo AI Agent Autonomy Scale' 1–5 scores and the duplicate heading: there was no published rubric.
  • Replaced 'OpenAI Operator' with OpenAI's reported 2026 agent products (ChatGPT Work, Agents API beta) and Codex.
  • Added Claude Code (verified), Gemini CLI (verified) and Claude's reported background computer use.
