Cursor Alternatives
Short answer
People leave Cursor for three reasons: price (GitHub Copilot Pro is $10 a month versus Cursor's $20), editor lock-in (Copilot works in JetBrains, Vim and others), or a preference for terminal agents (Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Gemini CLI). If you already pay for Claude or ChatGPT, their bundled agents cost nothing extra.
Cursor alternatives ranked by fit
| Tool | Choose it if | Price | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot | You want a lower price or a different editor | Pro $10/month; Pro+ $39 | Verified |
| Claude Code | You work in the terminal and pay for Claude | Included in Claude Pro ($20) and above | Verified |
| OpenAI Codex | You pay for ChatGPT Plus or higher | Included with listed ChatGPT plans | Verified (access) |
| Gemini CLI | You want a free terminal agent | Free tier: 1,000 requests/day | Verified |
| Replit AI | You want to build and deploy in the browser | Check provider (not confirmed) | Not confirmed |
| Windsurf | You want another AI-first editor | Check provider (not confirmed) | Not confirmed |
Switching cost
Cursor is a VS Code fork, so moving to VS Code with Copilot keeps most extensions and settings. Moving to a terminal agent changes the workflow more: you review diffs in git rather than in the editor.
