How to Choose an AI Voice Generator: 8 Checks

Short answer
Before choosing an AI voice generator, check eight things: the commercial licence on your plan, consent rules for voice cloning, the languages and accents you need, latency if it is for live use, output formats, API access, how your recordings are used, and the real price per finished minute. Test with your own script; demo voices are chosen to impress.
The eight checks
- Commercial licence: can you use the audio in paid products and ads on the plan you will buy? Is attribution required?
- Cloning consent: how does the vendor verify that you have permission to clone a voice?
- Languages and accents: test the exact languages, accents and names you need.
- Latency: for voice agents and live use, measure time to first audio, not just quality.
- Output formats: sample rate, file formats and whether you can export stems or SSML-style controls.
- API: documentation, rate limits and pricing for automated use.
- Data use: are your uploads or recordings used to train models? Can you delete them?
- Real cost: credits or characters per month converted into finished minutes, including retakes.
Monthly credits vs credits that carry over
Evidence: Editorial assessmentMost free voice plans reset every month, so an unused allowance is lost: ElevenLabs' free plan, for example, gives 10,000 credits a month (checked 5 October 2026). A few plans don't reset. Sintra Studio's 10,000 free credits never expire, and its free AI voice generator lets you hear a voice on your own text before signing up. If you publish once a month or less, carry-over matters more than the size of the monthly allowance.
Which type of tool
Evidence: Editorial assessmentReading apps such as Speechify read documents aloud. Voiceover studios such as Murf AI help produce narration. API platforms such as ElevenLabs and PlayHT suit developers. Respeecher focuses on speech-to-speech cloning for media production.
Common questions
Can I clone someone else's voice?
Only with their permission. Cloning without consent can break the law and every major vendor's terms.
Which AI voice generator is free?
Several have free tiers with limited characters and non-commercial terms. ElevenLabs' free plan gives 10,000 credits a month without a commercial licence (checked 5 October 2026); we have not re-verified the others, so check each provider's pricing page.
