Best AI Coding Assistants in 2026

Short answer

For most developers: GitHub Copilot if you want the cheapest paid plan ($10 a month) across many editors, Cursor ($20) for an AI-first editor, and Claude Code or OpenAI Codex if you want a terminal agent bundled with a chat subscription. Gemini CLI is the strongest free option at 1,000 requests a day.

Llama 2 has been removed from this list: it is a legacy general model, not a coding tool.
